I'm
adding this section because my students (and occasionally the staff) say
some truly hilarious/disturbing things, both in and outside of class. Any
names are false, partly to protect the privacy of those involved, but
mostly because I have 400+ students and I've only got about 8 names
memorized so far. Let's enjoy English together!
Pictionary:NEW!
Students are to whisper a sentence down their
column. Last student draws it on the board.
-
"Keith has been hit by a car and broke
his leg" (Student drew the correct pic, but wrote 'breeding' rather than
'bleeding' above it. JTE and I burst out laughing. Hilarity ensues
when students look up 'breeding' in their dictionaries. Much bowing
and apologizing by offender. )
True or False Game:
Students are in small groups and have prepared one true and one false
statement. They take turns reading them to the other groups, who must
guess if they are true or false. The best statements of the day:
- Kimiko is an E-cup. (False. We were informed she was an F-cup)
- I went to the toilet 1 time today. (False. Apparently she went
2x)
- My finger nails are two colors. (from a girl who came to the
front with her hands stuffed down the front of her
skirt; False. 4 colors)
My Favorite Things BINGO:
Students ask their friends questions about their favorite things (ie.
music, movies, etc) to fill out a BINGO card, then tell the class about
their friends' preferences using a "(name) likes _______" sentence
pattern. Best answer:
- Mai likes pornography (Mai is a 16 year old girl; Pornography is
a Japanese band)
Questions/Statements during my Self Intro classes:
- Who in this class would you like for a girlfriend? (one girl
jumped up and down and waved frantically)
- What do you think of me for a girlfriend?
- How many girlfriends do you have?
- I am looking for a new half. (As in better half)
- I care for you.
- Shall we dance? (got this twice)
- Shall we judo? (from a girl not in the judo club after they found
out I was in the judo club)
General Conversation:
- I hate you. I kill you. I need you. I love you. (in rapid
succession from a guy in a first year class to the JTE)
- Shizuka, shut up! (JTE to a student actually named Shizuka, which
means 'silence' in Japanese)
- Good morning everyone! (from a student walking up the hill beside
me. We were the only ones around.)
- Bye bye baby! (from one female student as I was leaving school)
- Thank you! (every morning from a Phys Ed teacher in response to
my asking, "How are you?")
- I don't speak English. (said in PERFECT, unaccented English by a first
year student)
- Uptown
Girl!...... Whoa Whoa! ..... Uptown Girl! (heard all over the school from
every boy in a first year class after we did a listening quiz using
Billy Joel)
